Messy Family Minute #65: Marriage Roles

This is a messy family minute with Mike and Alicia Hernon.

The world says husbands and wives have the same or even interchangeable roles. Some fundamentalists say wives should let their husbands decide everything and simply obey. This way of thinking does not reflect the rich, intricate, beautiful teachings of the Church on marriage.

A true Catholic marriage calls men and women to act in complementarity so they both become who God is calling them to be. Men act as the head and women act as the heart. These are sacred roles that communicate to the world the mystery of Christ’s relationship with the Church.

Christ sacrificed Himself for the Church and laid His body down for her. That’s how husbands are called to love their wives. Wives love their husbands by respecting and allowing them to protect and lead them to holiness. St. Paul sums up these roles in Ephesians 5 – “Husbands, love your wives…and wives, respect your husbands.”
