Messy Family Minute #55: Closeness

This is a messy family minute with Mike and Alicia Hernon.

A 2014 study entitled “Understanding Former Young Catholics” found that emotional closeness with parents, especially fathers, is a powerful indicator of whether or not a child will remain in the faith. Bonding with your child goes a long way in sharing the truth with them.

We want our children to be holy. And we need them to know that the path to holiness is found within the law of the Church. But rules without relationships breed rebellion. Children do need to know the truth, but if a parent communicates the law without love, it may actually do more harm than good.

By loving our children, we are nurturing their longing for a relationship with God. The love we have for them is only a shadow of the love that God, their heavenly Father, has for them. It is that relationship that will help them follow the moral law and choose the good.  Growing that relationship should be the goal of every Catholic parent.
