This is a Messy Family Minute with Mike and Alicia Hernon.
It’s the holiday season, and that’s traditionally the time when we gather with our extended family. It’s a joyful time–or it can be. Sometimes it can be a time of tension.
Let’s face it: it’s not always easy to get along with family. Unlike friends, family members can know us too well, or not know us as well as they should. If you don’t see family members often, try to use your time together to have positive experiences and to intentionally get to know them again.
If your family members are living in a way that you do not agree with, don’t use the holidays to address it. Instead, plan time to do things that you can both agree on – play games, plan trips to museums or parks, pull out a puzzle to work on, or take it outside and have a game of football or a tennis tournament! There are plenty of things to do together to build relationships and it’s from that platform that you can speak to their heart when the time is right.
