This is a Messy Family Minute with Mike and Alicia Hernon.
Mother Church gives us the Feast of All Souls at the beginning of November to pray for all the souls in purgatory, especially those who have no one to pray for them. This month is a good time to make a visit to the graves of family members and pray for all the souls in purgatory. Praying for souls is an act of charity and kindness.
Whenever we hear about a death in our community, or even the passing of celebrities or world leaders — we should get into the habit of praying even briefly with our children for their souls. Its a good reminder to them that our souls are eternal, and need care even AFTER death. You can work to create a habit in your children to pray as a part of grace before meals, or when you pass a cemetery–“May the souls of the faithful departed through the mercy of God rest in peace. Amen”
