This is a Messy Family Minute with Mike and Alicia Hernon.
“Fall cleaning” has always made more sense to us than “spring cleaning.” After all, the holidays are approaching, and that means company is coming! Plus if the kids expect to get a ton of Christmas presents, maybe that means it’s time to get rid of some toys first. The fall is a great time to take stock of our material possessions and our attachment to them. When we’re cleaning out the garage and taking out seasonal clothes, we should ask ourselves, “Can we give any of this away to those who might need it?”
This is also the time when charities start collecting warm clothing and toys for the poor. Get your kids involved. Ask them if there’s any clothing or toys they would like to give away. Giving to those in need is a great way to encourage growth in generosity. Remember, the poor can show up in unexpected guises: they might be neighbors or family members who are having a tough time or who could use the items you’re getting rid of. Ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to any need around you and be alert to His prompting.
